Summer Family Activities in Oklahoma
Hands down the best time of year in Oklahoma is the summer. We're blessed to have rolling plains, gorgeous weather, and a slew of activities at our fingertips. If you're looking for some summer fun, check out these activities in Oklahoma that are affordable and entertaining.
Route 66
Oklahoma is home to the largest stretch of the famous Route 66. Take a roadtrip down this historic path and discover over 120 historic road signs, a variety of off the beaten path attractions and the freedom of the open road. Notable landmarks include Pop's giant soda bottle and the Mohawk Lodge Indian Store.
Looking to escape city life? Take a trip back in time by visiting the Keystone Ancient Forest. Its 1360 acres are home to 500 year old post oaks and 300 year old cedars. Bring your camera in case you spot an American Eagle or bobcat and good hiking shoes. This primitive site is open on select Saturdays, so you'll want to call ahead to plan your trip.
One of the nation's best university art collections, this museum features an impressive 16,000 permanent pieces. It is located at the University of Oklahoma and includes pieces from Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O'Keeffe, along with displays documenting photography and even art from the south west.
Open April through September, this museum and town pay homage to the movie made famous by Sandra Bullock. It features memorabilia, behind-the-scenes footage, and movie props. Be sure to pick up a cool souvenir like a ball cap or Twister trading cards.
Located in the panhandle, Black Mesa is Oklahoma's highest peak. Bring plenty of snacks and water and a camera to capture the gorgeous sites, including real dinosaur tracks in the creek beds. As a bonus there are 36 RV sites here, so you can make a weekend of it!
